: who we are

Beliefs

Simple Church.
We are a simple church that meets on the Lord’s Day and encourages meetings during the week for Bible study, prayer, or food and fellowship. We are committed to teaching and shepherding whole families, preaching from Bible, and serving the Lord's Supper regularly.
Ancient Truth.
As part of the PCA denomination, we affirm our beliefs in “confessions” or plainly written details of what we believe God’s Word teaches on every major topic. We believe and will continue to teach the historic doctrines of the Christian faith.
Real People.
All of us gather as God’s children and celebrate his work of grace in each other's lives. We invite everyone to come and see and be part of our life together.
New Life.
You are here to honor God with your gifts, your worship, and your needs—bring all of it to God, and join us in the new life of living out the gospel as God’s people.

Is there no refuge from strife? Is there no place of refreshing where a man can prepare for the battle of life? Is there no place where two or three can gather in Jesus' name, to forget for the moment all those things that divide nation from nation and race from race, to forget human pride, to forget the passions of war, to forget the puzzling problems of industrial strife, and to unite in overflowing gratitude at the foot of the Cross? If there be such a place, then that is the house of God and that the gate of heaven. And from under the threshold of that house will go forth a river that will revive the weary world. ~

Who We Are

History

ECC Timeline

  • 2009
Over 12 years ago, God called Leonard Liu to plant Evergreen Community Church in Powhatan, Virginia. For ten years prior, he and his wife, Nancy served as an associate pastor at Sycamore Presbyterian (Midlothian).
  • 2009
We started meeting at Flat Rock Elementary school, training leadership, and raising up a new congregation for Christ.
  • 2016
We bought land in Powhatan (~10 acres) to be our future church home. This purchase included an existing red chicken coop/barn that we currently use a church office and meeting space, as well as a couple of homes.
  • 2019
In January of 2019, Pastor Leonard and Nancy went to work with our denomination’s mission agency. The church called Robert Barnes to be the pastor in July of 2019.
  • 2020
Until the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, we met at Flat Rock Elementary School. After  COVID we began meeting outdoors on the church property. In the winter, we moved to the Powhatan War Memorial and Cultural Arts Center.
  • TODAY
Evergreen called Pastor Nick Krauss in July 2022. We currently hold services every Sunday at Flat Rock Elementary School on Batterson Road.
