In Mark 14:27-42, we witness Jesus enter his final temptation in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus is only a few hours away from the full reality of divine judgement. The factors that would bring about the arrest, trial, and execution of Jesus are all in place. Yet there remains this last struggle in the Garden, and the sheer terror of what lies before him now seems to overwhelm him. He is entering the unique horror of making atonement for sinners: “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24).
