Once Jesus Christ died on the cross, no one expected the resurrection, despite the fact that He had predicted it on at least three separate occasions (Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:34). Why? Because ancient people knew just as well as we do that resurrections are impossible. Skepticism concerning the resurrection is nothing new. Mark 15:40-16:8 addresses all our doubts, both ancient and modern, with the shocking reality of the resurrection. Christianity is a religion rooted in history, in reality, dealing with facts, the most extraordinary fact of them all being the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without that Christianity collapses: “If Christ has not been raised,” says Paul “your faith is futile” (1 Corinthians 15:17).
